I don't really remember what I dreamt this morning because ... in the dream my elder son asked me a riddle. "How far does a king have to go for water?"

I got so intent on figuring it out, I woke myself up and now I'll never know the answer.

While I don't remember details, I do recall that my friend Anne-Marie was in the dream. It is always good to see her again. Not so good is the sense that we were present at an internment at the time.

“Christians, especially ministers, so often think they must always contribute something when they are in the company of others, that this is the one service they have to render. They forget that listening can be a greater service than speaking.”

“Many people are looking for an ear that will listen. They do not find it among Christians, because these Christians are talking where they should be listening. But he who can no longer listen to his brother will soon be no longer listening to God either; he will be doing nothing but prattle in the presence of God too. This is the beginning of the death of the spiritual life, and in the end there is nothing left but spiritual chatter and clerical condescension arrayed in pious words.”

- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Conservatives love to mock meditation and mindfulness techniques because they think they know everything about God.

Meditation is the practice of quieting the mind and listening for God. If a person is always talking at God and asking for favors, then how can they possibly be Godly?

Listen to the silence. Listen for God.

I finished making the hills today and planted the corn. Over the next few days, I'll be monitoring the plants to see if they are ... not dying. If they look like they won't survive, I'll plant seed corn. If they do thrive, though, I'll be able to plant the beans in another couple of weeks. And then the squash a few weeks after that.

I've never successfully grown a garden, I don't know if this will work. The space I'm using was where the pool was some 20 years ago, so it's about 9 feet round ... thereabouts. However large an above ground pool usually is. I have seven hills - about 3 stalks of corn per hill - instead of the recommended 4 ... :: shrug :: that's how it worked out with the ones I started inside. As it happens, I think I'm glad each hill has three stalks, because 3 is a significant number in Gaelic lore. And 7 is significant as well - although, I confess, I keep thinking of "the seven hills of Rome" more than anything from Gaelic.

I decided to leave the centre of the circle clear, someplace to train the squash vines. At this time I'm planning on planting butternut, butterkin and ... of course, the sacrificial gourd of Summer's end.

I wonder if anything will grow ...

We were finishing the washing up after dinner when my son announced that our neighbour across the street had fallen off a ladder. He saw it happen when he was looking out the window. I put on my clogs and ran across to see if I could help.

Mostly, I was able to be there with him, keeping him talking and NOT getting up, while his wife ran inside and got herself ready to take him to the emergency room. I think it eased her mind that she wasn't leaving him on his lonesome.

He didn't seem hurt too badly - a bump on the back of his head, a scrape on one hand but he was bleeding from one ear. Plus, he's had heart surgery, so he's on blood thinners; the bruising was pretty fierce.

He'd been up the ladder to remove a bird's nest on the security lamp over the garage. I say ... leave it!
