A while back, a friend told me that it is not possible to read in a dream. That the section of the brain controlling reading comprehension is turned off while dreaming.

Immediately, I began noticing instances of the written word in my dreams, noticing the difficulty in interpreting them and ... okay ... feeling smug when I did manage to read a sentence or two. (I did the same thing when a high school friend informed me that NOBODY every notices their hands in dream state and with the conventional wisdom that you can't die in a dream. It's ... strange being a ghost in your own dream, btw.)

This morning, however, I desperately needed to write something in a dream. I needed to copy down a name and three strings of numbers and I could not do it. I could read it well enough. The first name was Nylie, the first number started with 98- (then three numbers a dash and two more) and the other two numbers were long book identification numbers for checking out. But I couldn't find any paper to copy it down, the paper I did find turned into something else (socks, tissues, gauze), there were no working pens.

It was incredibly frustrating, and the poor girl really wanted her books renewed. (Computers were off or down and nobody had been put into the system yet so we couldn't access the accounts.)

I don't recall ever trying to write something in a dream before. I wonder how long this will obsess my sleeping mind?
