I was discussing the dream I posted yesterday with a friend and she remarked on the fact that the reading centers of the brain are shut down during dreaming. According to my friend, it is not physically possible to read anything in a dream. She related a story of a woman who fought night terrors by posting a sign on the ceiling above her bed that asked "Can you read this?" because if she could read it, she was awake. Of course, she had to dream at least semi-lucidly in order to remind herself to look for the sign.

This morning I was having a "the bell just rang and I have to get to class but I don't know where the room is" dream. So I pulled out my schedule and checked. I managed to read all the classes but the only one I remembered after I put it away again was that I had Bailey for Language Arts in C or D Block.

Our local high school has a rotating schedule of 7 classes, each Day - 1 through 7 - first period is a different class block. And I couldn't remember what Day it was. I asked the Principle (Barack Obama!) but he said he didn't have to keep track of the Days. A student I saw in the hall told me it was Day 1, but by then I couldn't remember what I had for Block A.

I suspect that this is another example of my passive aggression against being told what I can and cannot do. When a friend told me that people never notice their hands in dreams, I made a determined effort to look after something in a dream informed me that that was what it was. (I had two opposing thumbs - one on either side of my hand - and the three other fingers where they belong). I also suspect that it has something to do with the overstimulation of my brain brought on by the activity of learning a new language.
