Craft - book binding
Sep. 5th, 2020 03:55 pmI have a minor ... not-so-minor obsession with small notebooks. I prefer quarter-size (14 x 10.5 cm) to eighth-size (11 x 7 cm) and I really REALLY prefer to make them myself rather than buy them. I use the smaller size to make notes for my language courses and the larger one for journal entries. Believe me, it makes you concentrate your attention to get a lesson in a palm-sized page!
One of the things I've long considered about a school for magic is that the students would need to make their own spellbook/s, but I haven't been able to figure out how they would add in pages as necessary. Most of the notebooks I make use a sort of plastic stationary book rings of which I happen to have several hundreds. I had picked up some sort of plastic comb binder rings (about a hundred, with 30 rings per comb and I cut them apart for my stationary book rings.

This is the journal I'm using for world-building Borderlands. As you can see, the pages I have already put in the book are the maximum possible. (Or maybe you can't see because it's not a great picture. I dropped my camera a few days back and now it won't work properly.)

Because I very much want the possibility of expansion and because I want to see how it would be possible to add in more sheets, I've been looking into the subject of Coptic Book Binding. Last night, I tried my hand at it. I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. I inserted 4 signatures with 10 folios each (each signature has a total of 20 sheets of paper, which makes 40 pages per signature and that's 160 pages total). I made a couple of errors in it but nothing that will cause any issues down the line. I'd include a picture of the completed book but ... camera!
I plan to use this as a day-book or commonplace journal as opposed to the idea journal that is currently filled with Borderland thoughts.
Yesterday's "boring" events filled almost 4 pages with descriptions of people and objects I noticed. One woman is described as a "dwarf-matron" while another is a "purple-haired lesser elf" - because that's how I identify folks.
